I had the pleasure to speak with Elly Blake at Evening Standard and share my professional opinion to raise awareness about the post-pandemic stress disorder that is now posing a health risk for over a quarter of a million people across the UK:

PPSD is a very real problem on a massive scale. As well as the condition itself with all its immediate problems, one of the biggest collateral issues is the effect it can have on heart health.

It is widely recognised that reducing stress and mental health problems is crucial to the prevention and recovery of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes. We are talking about as many as 300,000 new patients with heart issues.

Everyone has heard of PTSD, but we really urgently need to get our heads around PPSD. The pandemic and the resulting lockdowns it’s brought have had a massive effect on the mental health of the whole nation.

EASE Wellbeing talking therapy service has been established for many years for the sole purpose of making talking therapies available, accessible and affordable to all those who request help.

It is now more critical than ever that this message is communicated. This is because so many are experiencing symptoms of worry, stress, distress, sleeplessness, lethargy, trouble concentrating and a whole host of difficult concerns.

These symptoms are similar to many experienced by people diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which has been considered for over 100 years and emerged in combat situations. More recently, many other traumatising experiences have led to this diagnosis.

With public sector waiting lists for many conditions leaving many people with stress or trauma due to the pandemic, we considered the more appropriate use of the term Post-Pandemic Stress Disorder (PPSD).

The importance of this is that it recognises the current impact of the pandemic upon peoples’ ability to live as they would wish and provides a simple pathway to accessible, available and affordable treatment that does not require medication necessarily or involve long waiting times.

At EASE Wellbeing, we have accessible and affordable support for all wanting to have these conversations.
