Distress Councelling

Distress may seem like a term that captures all of the above and to an extent it is a word that many of our difficulties may lead to. However, distress may be the result of loss or bereavement, loss of income or the ability to look after ourselves and those that we are related to and depend upon or depend upon us.

Talking therapies focus upon that which each person experiences as distressing in order that close attention can be given to how we can get stuck in these experiences.

The ambition is to be able to cope with stress so that we can relieve us of our distress but it is vital to start where we are if we are in a state of distress so that we can plan a course of counselling to be able to overcome distress and be able to recover a sense of being able to cope with the stresses and strains of life.

The problem of distress

When we experience a sense of distress, our whole beings are affected, and we feel physical and emotional symptoms and a loss of wellbeing and even a state of being unwell.

Distress itself is not a diagnosed illness but it can lead to many experiences of illness and unwellness.

Distress vs stress

Distress is the inability to cope with stress so stress can be invigorating but distress is demeaning, exhausting and debilitating.

The effect on our bodies

As with many other psychological or emotional difficulties and struggles, distress can lead to us being unable to concentrate and, although exhausting, can lead to being constantly agitated and unable to relax or sleep.

So our whole beings are in a state that is unhealthy and taxing and this further impacts our ability to make decisions or assert our needs and can be a cycle that leaves us uncertain and stuck.

How we help
